Hip & Thigh Ultrasound

PRICE: £135

£185

An ultrasound scan of the hip is performed to have a look at the hip joint and muscles surrounding the hip as well as the trochanteric bursa. A quick survey scan of the muscles of the thigh is also performed at the same time.

Common conditions

A hip and thigh ultrasound scan is useful in evaluating the following conditions:

  • What is Trochanteric Bursitis?
Bursitis is a condition that affects the joints of the hip and causes pain when the fluid-filled sacs between bones, tendons, joints, and muscles become inflamed.
  • How common is it?
Trochanteric Bursitis is a common condition.
  • Does it affect males and females?
It can affect both men and women.
  • What age groups?
Trochanteric Bursitis more commonly affects middle-aged or elderly women.
  • What are the main symptoms?
The main symptoms of Trochanteric Bursitis are pain and swelling over the sides of the hip bone than may travel down along the outside of the thigh to the knee, and pain while sleeping on the affected side.
  • How is it tested for?
A physician will usually test for Trochanteric Bursitis by doing a physical exam and order X-rays in order to rule out any other conditions.
  • How is it treated?
Anti-inflammatory medications can be used to reduce pain and swelling as well as corticosteroid injections, physical therapy and motion range exercises or splints may also be used. In rare cases surgery may be needed.
  • What is Quadriceps Tear?
A Quadriceps Tear is a disabling injury that usually needs surgery on the knee tendons.
  • How common is it?
These types of injuries are not common.
  • Does it affect males and females?
Quadriceps tears can affect both men and women.
  • What age groups?
People who participate in running and jumping sports and who are middle aged are the most likely to suffer from this type of injury.
  • What are the main symptoms?
There will likely be bruising around the knee and an indentation on the top of the kneecap where the torn tendon is located, as well as tenderness, cramping and an overall difficulty in walking due to the knee buckling. It can be a very painful injury.
  • How is it tested for?
Doctors will usually order imaging tests such as MRI, CT scan and do a range of motion tests to confirm whether or not the tendon is torn.
  • How is it treated?
Treatment for this injury usually involves the RICE system of rest, ice, compression and elevation. Physical therapy can also be used to help regain motion and muscle strength. In more severe cases surgery may be necessary.
  • What is Hamstring Tear?
A hamstring tear is a tear or strain of the tendons and larger muscles on the back of the thigh.
  • How common is it?
This is a common injury for athletes.
  • Does it affect males and females?
Hamstring tears can affect both men and women.
  • What age groups?
Middle-aged people who participate in sports are the most likely to suffer from a torn hamstring.
  • What are the main symptoms?
A torn hamstring may cause sudden and severe pain while exercising as well as a snapping or popping feeling, pain in the back of the thigh, bruising and tenderness.
  • How is it tested for?
Most hamstring tear cases can be diagnosed during a physical exam where a doctor will perform routine range of motion tests such as the straight leg raise test, resisted knee flexion and the slump test. In more severe cases an MRI may be ordered.
  • How is it treated?
Treatment for this injury usually involves the RICE system of rest, ice, compression and elevation. Physical therapy can also be used to help regain motion and muscle strength. In more severe cases surgery may be necessary.

Risks

Ultrasound scan of the hip and thigh is a safe procedure and has no known risks.

How to prepare

No specific preparation is required for this scan.

What you can expect

Before your ultrasound, you may be asked to change into a gown and to remove any jewelry. You will be asked to sit on an examination table.

A radiologist will perform your scan. A small amount of ultrasound gel is applied to your hip and thigh. The gel enables the ultrasound device to provide better images.

The radiologist will gently press an ultrasound probe against various points on your hip and thigh. They will also ask you to move your leg into different positions. Depending upon your symptoms you may experience some pain during this scan. The radiologist will always try to make the scan as comfortable as possible. If you take regular pain medication please have these to hand when you have your scan as you may be a little sore afterwards. The ultrasound scan takes around 30 minutes to complete.

You will be able to return to normal activities immediately after your scan.

Results

The radiologist will prepare a written report immediately after your scan. You can wait for the written report and should you wish a copy of your scan images can be sent to you via email so you have them to hand at all times.

Follow up with Rejuvence Scans

We always recommend booking in a consultation immediately after your scan with one of our doctors to discuss the results of your scan and to provide advice regarding any further investigations and/or treatment. Further investigations and treatment can include:
Blood tests
Referral to a specialist (Private/NHS*)
Referral for further imaging (Private MRI)
* Please note that for referrals back to NHS you will still have to go via your GP but Rejuvence Medical will provide a full report and cover letter in support of the referral.

Ultrasound guided
drainage of bursitis

For immediate symptomatic relief it is possible to perform ultrasound guided drainage of large swellings around the elbow. The fluid drained can also be sent off to the lab to identify the presence of any infection. Following drainage a course of antibiotics will normally be prescribed.

Ultrasound guided joint injections

Following identification of certain injuries or conditions we are also able to offer ultrasound guided cortisone (steroid) injections. Cortisone injections help to reduce inflammation and if combined with local anaesthetic can provide significant pain relief for upto 6 weeks.

Using the Angel Arthrex system ultrasound guided plasma injections can help to accelerate the repair of muscle injuries. This is a treatment elite athletes often use to come back from injury quicker.

Alternative medical providers

We are connected to NHS digital and the PACS framework. Should you wish your scan images can be sent directly to your NHS GP or hospital consultant. If you have been referred by a private medical practitioner, with your consent, your results will be securely emailed through to them.
